Datadubai
That's the name that I gave my website about Dubai. It was on 28-Dec-1997, to be specific. I had been planning a visit to the UAE for some time (as a tourist) and I was excited with the prospect of coming face to face with Arabia. I decided to do a website on Dubai as a hobby. That website turned out to be datadubai.com
When I landed in Dubai for the first time in February 1998, I saw a very beautiful western-type of city but alas, Arabia eluded me. Armed with a camera and a lot of optimism, I went in search of Arabia and that quest turned out to be a decade long one.
Although I had initially decided to visit as a tourist, a quirk of fate converted me from being a tourist to setting up my own company there within a matter of months. It is one of the events in my life I term as a "Hand-of-God" one. Read the interesting story as to how I got to Dubai here
Datadubai became an encyclopedic website, around 450 pages in size. It had the best search engine rankings and if one Googled Dubai, <whatever>, the site was in the top 5 results. This came to the attention of a British real estate firm in Dubai who wished to acquire a popular website about Dubai so that they could market their products to the millions of people who visited the site.
Datadubai and I said goodbye to each other in January 2006. I was left USD 10,000 richer. And very sad. Datadubai.com had become a part of my entire family. I was very sorry to see it go.
