Bargaining Thai style

So here we are, haggling in the Kanchanaburi heat with this Thai taxi driver. He knows no English and we know no Thai. Initially, a group of people surrounds us, trying to help. We soon find that they are more a hindrance than help and we wave them away.

Very soon, we have a solution. The communication impasse has been bridged in the town that boasts of the Bridge Over The River Kwai! The solution actually comes from the Thai driver. Whipping out a ball point pen, he scribbles "500" on his left hand. We scribble "275". This scribbling goes on for quite a while. Each time, the hand is rubbed so as to remove earlier scribbles.

Finally, the Thai driver scribbles "350" on his hand. Giving us a defiant look he waves his left hand (the one with the "350" written on it) and shouts "Hello!". Then he waves the other hand and shouts Bye Bye.

His meaning is clear. It's 350 baht or no go.

We give him a resigned shrug and a nod of the head to signify acceptance and we are on our way.

Want to take a look at his hand? It's here.
